Producer of sport horses needed a winter turnout solution

"The pens are a flexible solution for us to keep safe all year round regardless of the weather and a majority of the horses are out 24/7 when possible."

Producer of sport horses needed a flexible solution to cater for bad weather and rehabilitation.

Context of the project:

Charlotte Davies of Moorside Farm is a producer of home bred sport horses located in the North West UK, 1000ft up in the Pennines:

"Our land isn't next to our property, so we have a 5 to 10-minute walk to our fields, which include steep hills. At 1000 feet on the Pennines between Rochdale and Halifax, we face harsh weather. The roads were gritted when we moved here, but that has stopped over time. There have been times when our horses were stuck in the yard for up to 10 days due to ice, causing stress for both them and us. We’re caught between leaving them in hard fields with no way to return them in an emergency or keeping them safe in the yard without turnout."

Fencing solution presented by Jelka

"We opted to convert one of our stable blocks into outdoor pens to simplify labour and still give outdoor turnout for the horses. By replacing stable fronts with matted gates, we can easily access the area with our tractor for mucking out and bedding. These gates also link to the Jelka Turnout Fencing between pens, allowing safe interaction among horses.

This individual pen setup ensures that all horses can enjoy social contact on their own terms as not all horses are buddies!  The space is too small for 4 big horses to be simply turned out together safely."

Considerations made for the turnout areas:

"Our flooring in the turnout areas is concrete which may not be for everyone. We may consider a rubber floor later down the line.  All pens have huge beds in their stables that they have access to all the time.

The pens are a flexible solution for us to keep safe all year round regardless of the weather and a majority of the horses are out 24/7 when possible."

Additional benefits of the pens:

"We now have a safe and secure area to rehabilitate any injuries. Horses on box rest have much more room to move round."
