New turnout pen project
At Jelka, we pride ourselves on delivering equestrian solutions that are not only durable and functional but are also designed with the individual horse’s welfare and specific management needs in mind. Our recent project in Gloucestershire was no exception. Created for dressage rider Rachel Lade, this bespoke installation reflects our commitment to functional innovation and horse well-being.
A clear vision from our client
Rachel approached us with a clear vision: to relocate her dressage horses to her home and provide them with an environment better suited to their behavioural and physical needs. Of particular concern was her eldest horse, Shimmer. Having spent much of his life in traditional stabling, Shimmer had limited opportunities for movement and social interaction, two key aspects that help create a happy, healthy horse. Additionally, his sensitivity to grass meant that turnout in a conventional paddock setting posed significant challenges.
Adjoining pens to stables
The solution Rachel proposed was the creation of four adjoining pens to the rear of her stables. These pens offer an ideal balance between controlled access and open movement, giving the horses the freedom to stretch, roll, and engage with one another, all without the risks associated with unrestricted grazing. This type of semi-turnout arrangement has gained popularity among horse owners in recent years, specifically among those who need to carefully manage their horses’ environments without compromising on welfare.
CAD design and Manufacture
The project began with a CAD design process, led by Jared. This digital planning stage ensured that every pen was fabricated to precise measurements.

Installation of flooring and fencing
Installation was carried out by the Jelka team, who fitted both the fencing and Komfortex flooring. The Komfortex slabs offer a superior surface for year-round use, combining slip-resistance, shock absorption, and durability. Unlike traditional concrete or rubber matting, Komfortex supports joint health and provides a safe footing in all weathers.
What is special about the fencing?
The fencing itself was constructed from galvanised steel, offering strength and longevity. For additional peace of mind, the design incorporated a custom post and rail system engineered for easy removal in the event of an emergency or accidental damage. The systems also allows removal of rails to adjust pen sizes. This thoughtful approach ensures that both horse and handler safety remain a priority, even in unforeseen circumstances.

Comments from our client:
Rachel was delighted with the final result, noting the immediate positive effect the pens had on her horses’ behaviour. “The adjoining pens have been a game-changer for managing my dressage horses,” she said. “Seeing them socialise and have the space to roll and stretch has been amazing. I’ve already noticed a huge improvement in their mood and behaviour, and it’s only been a few weeks!”
This project is a testament to the powerful impact that carefully planned, welfare-focused design can have on horse management. If you’re considering an upgrade to your equestrian facilities or are seeking a tailored management solution for your horses, our team would be delighted to discuss your needs.
